Hot Hot Hot

A few weeks ago while staying at my friend’s home in Atlanta, I rediscovered my love for RED. She doesn’t live in any old shack though… her family resides at The St. Regis in the heart of Buckhead. I absolutely love going to stay for weekend not only because I feel like I am a part of her family, but because I always admire the beautiful interiors they change seasonally in the public areas of the hotel. And the killer pool isn’t too bad.

Doesn’t the bright red pop in contrast to the tan cement?! The perfect color for this area in my opinion. I also applaud the scale of the different aspects around the pool: the lanterns, awnings, fireplace, and staircase for example.

Here are some of my other red inspirations:

Turnin’ Up The Heat

While stalking Steven Gambrel on Instagram, I came across his fireplace design for a recent project:

photo

Gorgeous isn’t it? I love how he manipulated simple moldings to come up with something unique. And the gold edges don’t hurt either.

I personally believe fireplaces should exit in most, if not all, of living rooms – it makes the space comfortable and homey. Some of my favorite memories are making s’mores and relaxing near the fire on our big cozy couch. There is really nothing better.

Here are some good looking mantles to spice up your day:

It’s Official

The flowers on campus have finally come into bloom and I couldn’t be more excited! The bright colors I see around Athens, I have also noticed on the spring runways and new, fresh interiors – I can’t seem to get enough of the purples, pinks, yellows and blues:

Designer Crush

While on a field trip to ADAC last Thursday, our class stopped by Westbrook Interiors to talk with Barbara Westbrook about the design industry since we will be joining the real world soon!

Screen shot 2014-03-24 at 3.38.10 PM

She took us through an entire residential project and explained her design process. Each design firm differs in how they do business, so it was interesting to see her specific perspective. Her office itself was so charming, I wish I could show you the interiors!

One aspect of Mrs. Westbrook ‘s designs that I greatly admire is her ability to adapt to her clients’ desires. No two projects in her portfolio are the same – she literally takes what her clients tell her and transforms it into reality, while still being in good taste.

She is also coming out with a book soon by Rizzoli so be on the lookout!

Check of Approval

It has become a sort of ‘trend’ for designers to collaborate with fabric, furniture or lighting manufacturers to actually conceptualize and design their own line for the brand, which I think is fantastic. What makes an  interior designer unique is their specific view or perspective and how they translate it to reality. When a designer has the opportunity to create a line from their own ideas and taste, it is also an opportunity for the public (aka me) to incorporate this style into their home. No two collections are the same – each designer draws inspiration from completely different situations. One of my favorite lines was Mary McDonald for Schumacher last year, which coincidentally was Schumacher’s best selling line of all time.

Atlanta’s Schumacher representative, Karen, comes to the F&I program at UGA once a year to present these new fabrics to SIDA (Student Interior Design Association). She showed and explained the fabrics, wall coverings and trims just as she would to design firms in Atlanta. This included the fabric content, weave, fibers, colorfastness, performance specifications and possible end uses of each fabric.

This time she came with Timothy Corrigan‘s new collection. I was actually lucky enough to meet him at ADAC if you remember from my old post! He is an incredibly talented designer based out of LA, who also recently released his new book about his chateau in France. I guess you could say he’s having a pretty good year.

Presents from the goody bag!

Luck o’ the Irish

Happy St. Patty’s Day!! I am so sorry for the lack of posts recently… I have had a hard couple of weeks, having traveled to Nashville, New Orleans, Atlanta, Jamaica and Savannah. So yes, I live a rough life. But it’s now back in Athens for my last month and a half of college (noooo), so I will definitely be living it up – not like I had an excuse for the past four years.

To get y’all in the Irish mood, I have selected some fun green home accessories to make your day just that much better. I personally love the color green and frequently try to incorporate it into my designs (Emerald was 2013’s Pantone Color of the Year!).

e1af7a769a6ff01e6c4eaf0e18ccd974

Because green is the color of nature, it symbolizes growth, harmony and freshness. It comes in various shades, each triggering a different emotion or feeling. Dark green is associated with ambition, aqua with emotional healing and protection, and olive green is the traditional color of peace. Enjoy the green!

If Possible Please

For our main project in TXMI 5320, The Professional Practice Notebook, we have a series of mini phases due throughout the semester that represents the various stages a business owner of an interior design firm would experience. This helps us to not only understand what it takes to actually own a business, but to also help us ‘brand’ ourselves. This notebook includes: a business plan, marketing plan, research case studies, self assessments, expense reports, resume, cover letter and portfolio, as well as mock interviews (help). Obviously if I were to open up my own firm, it would be several years down the road. But a girl can dream.

Here is what my stationary and business cards would look like:

Slide1

The business card would consist of a thicker paper material and the edges would be metallic gold.

(I used the address of a former employer, fyi)

As a young designer, branding and establishing yourself is essential – especially when looking for jobs. You must have confidence in yourself in order for others to see your true potential. I will start applying to firms in both San Francisco and Dallas next month (minor freak out is in the near future), so this is something I really have to start thinking about.

Ins & Outs

While browsing Architectural Digest for some inspiration for a school project, I came across this insane Boston townhouse designed by Thad Hayes. The current owners actually purchased two townhomes which they converted into one, and spent thirteen years buying each individual unit to do so. The first photograph of the formal entry immediately caught my eye because of the incredible, historic paneling:

item0.rendition.slideshowWideVertical.hayes-01-thad-hayes-dell-mitchell-boston-formal-main-entry

And it continues to the entrance hall:

item1.rendition.slideshowWideHorizontal.hayes-17-thad-hayes-dell-mitchell-boston-stairwell-extra

Stunning right?! The carved woodwork seems to be a reoccurring theme.

The ceiling!!

item10.rendition.slideshowWideVertical.hayes-19-thad-hayes-dell-mitchell-boston-kitchen-extra

I can’t handle it…

item14.rendition.slideshowWideHorizontal.hayes-13-thad-hayes-dell-mitchell-boston-master-bedroom

item13.rendition.slideshowWideVertical.hayes-07-thad-hayes-dell-mitchell-boston-library

item18.rendition.slideshowWideVertical.hayes-20-thad-hayes-dell-mitchell-boston-bathroom-extra

So this is definitely on my list of favorite townhouses. I love the mix of everything – different eras of furniture, different types of hardware, different textures and materials, and especially the mix of the plain grain and white painted paneling. These contrasts creates a home that is not only unique, but also personal and intimate, which is essential in a home.

Wonderland

UGA was closed today due to the overnight snow storm, which I had absolutely no problem with. Being the warm-blooded Texan that I am, I literally did not leave my house.

Things I did today:

1. snuggled with my friends while watching Breaking Bad

2. baked oatmeal chocolate chip cookies

So yes, it was a very productive day. Even though I did not necessarily play in the snow, that doesn’t mean I did not appreciate it. Looking out onto my lawn, with that white blanket that so seamlessly covered everything in sight, was incredibly beautiful. Everything was clean, pure – it almost made me want to move north. Almost.
